The NovCare 2019 International Conference (Novel Methods for Subsurface Characterization and Monitoring: From Theory to Practice) will take place May 28-31, 2019 at the Federation Hall and Conference Centre of the University of Waterloo. This conference, organized by the University of Waterloo, the Kansas Geological Survey and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, is the sixth conference in a series that has proven to be an excellent forum for exchanging ideas and experiences related to the challenges of subsurface characterization and monitoring. Previous conferences in the series were in Leipzig in 2009, Cape Cod in 2011, Leipzig again in 2013, Kansas in 2015 and Dresden in 2017.

NovCare 2019 will again provide an outstanding platform for researchers and practitioners from all over the world to share research on innovative methods for characterization and monitoring of aquifers, soils, and watersheds.

NovCare 2019 will focus on two main topics:

  • Interdisciplinary approaches to monitoring multiscale dynamic processes during extreme hydrologic events: Near real time data for decision making and modeling.
  • Data fusion from orbit-based, low elevation and terrestrial sensing systems: Combining data from multiple platforms and emerging sensor technology to enhance site characterization.

Following thematic areas are planned:

  • Advances in isotope tracers for subsurface characterization and finger printing
  • Characterizing frozen and melting soils
  • Advances in groundwater –surface water interaction and critical zone monitoring
  • Specific monitoring requirements in Ecohydrology
  • Emerging sensor technologies at all monitoring scales
  • Multiscale monitoring in fracture rock environments
  • Big data synthesis and aspects of artificial intelligence
  • Benchmarking models with real-world data: How to get high-quality data in the field and how to use these data for reliable model predictions?
